Shooting Stars Club of Ibadan
practically surprised everyone on Wednesday as they defeated Abia
Warriors 2-0 in one of the Premier League mid-week games. The Stars
played without their coach Kadiri Ikhana who left the team by the
weekend and got the full points at the Lekan Salami Stadium after months
of financial struggles. Ikhana resigned following the team’s poor-run
having publicly complained about the welfare of the players.
On Wednesday, it was Kabir Uma who
opened scoring for 3SC in the 50th minute. Six minutes afterwards Muyiwa
Lawal doubled the lead and the Ibadan boys held on tenaciously to their
goals until the final whistle.
But the day of surprises did not end
with the match in Ibadan as struggling Ikorodu United also earned a
surprise victory beating Warri Wolves 1-0 at the Agege Stadium in Lagos.
The only goal of the day was scored by Fatai Oluwadayo via a free-kick
in the 42nd minute. Incidentally, Ikorodu’s coach Sam Okpodu was
formerly with Wolves.
Rivers United returned to the summit
after they defeated their guests Akwa United 1-0 courtesy of a fourth
minute strike by Bernard Ovoke. It was Ovoke’s fifth goal of the
campaign.
The Port Harcourt club now have 34
points from 19 matches, while former leaders Rangers will wait until
Friday night for their match against rivals Heartland.
Heartland and Plateau United ended their match goalless at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.
In another game, Nasarawa United shocked Lobi Stars 2-1 at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi.
The match billed for the Kwara Stadium
in Ilorin between Giwa FC and Enyimba did not hold as the Giwa team
failed to show-up. And it became the third consecutive time that the Jos
based team who were banished to Ilorin for their home games would miss
their match. The League Management Company is expected to take a
decision on the team soon. It is most likely that the team will be
expelled going by the rule of the league.
