The headquarters compliance team ‘C’
Ogun/Oyo axis of the Nigeria Customs Service has impounded 305 pieces of
used tyres concealed in a Mercedes Benz truck.
A statement to the press said the truck,
with registration number LSk 835 XP, was intercepted while the team was
on routine patrol.
It read, “The truck was laden with
large quantities of soaps, used clothings, used tyres, detergents, large
quantities of blenders, 136 giant cartons of cosmetics, 145 cartons of
pampers, etc.
“It is pertinent to note that some of
the items mentioned don’t fall into the prohibition list but we had to
confiscate them as a means of concealment in line with the extant laws.”
Leader
of the team, Abdulmaruf Shittu, also added that the team, acting on a
tip off, had intercepted one used Iveco truck, with registration number
SUC 527 XA, suspected to be carrying prohibited goods, along the
Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode Expressway.
Further investigation revealed that 950
cartons of brand new foreign shoes, totalling 23,340 pairs; and 30 jumbo
sacks of local slippers, totalling 816 pairs, which were used to neatly
conceal the items.
Shittu said, “In a separate operation, a
Toyota Hiace bus, with registration number GUE 60 XA, was intercepted
along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode expressway, laden with 30 bales of secondhand
clothings. The goods have been taken to the Customs facility at Ikeja.”
